On Symphonic works

Under The Sign Of Dance
Review of performance of Thomas Koppel: Los Angeles Street Concerto:
'the light orchestral texture of strings and celesta was held in a swarming and shimmering timbre of deep originality with the solo voice of the recorder as an integrated part. Michala Petri played her part with a fascinating pure intonation and a significant rythmic precision, and the performance spellbound with its uncompromising combination of vitality and original melodics.'

Profound Sweetness Of The 90ies.
Frederiksborg Amts Avis. Danish daily
Review of Thomas Koppel concert with The Tivoli Symphony Orchestra, choir, and soloists,
featuring Symphony no. 2, Ouverture Solennelle, and Moonchild's Dream

Thomas Koppel's Moonchild's Dream:
English Chamber Orchestra/Okko Kamu
Michala Petri, recorder
RCA Victor Red Seal 09026-62543-2 DDD 77:53

My first review for 1996 is a rave... The composer imagined a waif-like girl in the slums of Copenhagen being turned, at least for a night, into a fairy princess through her imagination. The music captures both the harshness of her reality and the magic and fantasy of her transcendence. A friend of mine supplied a Dickensian image: butterflies fluttering over and lighting on the bodies of dead soldiers.
Petri's performances are definitive, and Okko Kamu, an under-rated conductor, leads the English Chamber Orchestra in colorful accompaniments. Sound quality is fine and has the flavor of the studio rather than that of the concert hall. Don't let bad memories of playing the recorder in elementary school keep you away from this disc - it's a beauty.

Michala Petri - The Ultimate Recorder Collection

Michala Petri - The Ultimate Recorder Collection.
RCA Red Seal 74321 59112 (2CDs 1:13:17; 1:14:02).

I would have liked to have had more than the three-minute snippet from "Moonchild's Dream" by Petri's fellow Dane Thomas Koppel (b. 1944), but that's just because the full work happens to be one of my favorite contemporary pieces.

NELE'S DANCES STUTTGART FESTIVAL
Michala Petri, Lars Hannibal und neun Blockflöten in Ludwigsburg
Stuttgarter Zeitung, September 2002

Perfect!...Amazing! (Rating 5.0 out of 5.0)

(TAXI A&R, 2000 on 3 songs from Tameless, a new Savage Rose album)

They have free access to the music's eternal inexhaustible river that flows undisturbed
far beneath insignificant fads. And with an almost divine sense of melody and silky soft
production added with minimalist lyrics, which says it all with half the number of words,
he couple once again, with their ten new songs, leaves the listener out of breath
wishing that the music never ends.

'For Your Love' unfolds in full bloom and end up offering one musical treat after another.
(Jyllandsposten, Danish nationwide daily, Uffe Christensen)

The Savage Rose has created a masterpiece. And Thomas Koppel proves he is far more hip than his younger collegues...
Naiveté and humility are the first words striking me when I listen to Tameless. The naiveté is about the pure and innocent, uncompromising approach with which Annisette and Thomas Koppel create their music. Humility is an art, almost no artists are mastering today. But Thomas has the humility, the sensivity and the gentle embrace, that makes the music unfold and grow unrestrained and wild defying all conventions.......
that's why Thomas' solutions become far more hip than the ones even the hippest young musicians are able to present.
The ten songs are like one long, happy and well balanced breath. ......
masterly musical handicraft. The fact that Tameless' is so perfect, so unforgettable and important, is of course also due to Annisette's formidable voice. Her vocals have never been more overwhelming, more insisting and vulnerable than here. She owns the gift to stir and move her audience....
just like Billie Holiday....

Fyns Stiftstidende, Danish daily

Tameless- The Savage Roses first album since the giant comeback with Black Angel- is a huge experience. No other singer has such an intensely appealing voice as Annisette. ....and very few has so many beautiful songs to choose from, in a wonderful and very original mixture of crystal-clear pop, soul, funk, gospel, even with a stench of dance/disco - in the midst of a fascinating rustle of new-age-like atmospheres. A beautiful example to proove that commercial music may still be an art. I won't be surprised if The Savage Rose receives another Grammy this year.

Frontpage review: Masterpiece.....Savage Rose's first English language album for 22 years, Black Angel, is sublime and unique, a fullborn masterpiece with no parallel, nationally and abroad.....

At The Top Of The Danish Music Elite....
(****** 6 stars out of 6) The first album from The Savage Rose in several years is an unparallelled musical experience...Koppel has done some beautifully balanced songs, holding tradition but also with exactly that touch of the 90ies, that makes them contemporary... An album so consistent - so unique - that you dont need many words. Black Angel is a compositional, vocal and instrumental milestone and reinstalls Savage Rose at the top of the Danish musical elite....
